Love Comes Full Circle

Sometimes the greatest privilege in life is caring for the ones who once cared for us.

One of the greatest lessons I've learned through Brighter Days Senior Companions is that helping others isn't just something we do.

It's how we love.

Recently, someone very dear to me received a difficult diagnosis. The man I've called "Daddy" for more than thirty years will begin the journey through radiation and chemotherapy. As I write this, we're taking things one appointment, one meal, and one day at a time.

Years ago, our roles were very different.

When my mom faced cancer, he never left her side. He drove her to treatments, cared for her through the difficult days, and somehow found the strength to keep everything else moving. He was steady, patient, and quietly faithful in the way he loved her.

Today, life looks different.

My mom has thankfully been in remission for many years, but because of her own health challenges, she isn't able to care for him the way he once cared for her.

So now, I find myself making the drive to their house with containers of homemade soup, soft casseroles, and meals that are a little easier to swallow. I help with appointments, check in throughout the week, and try to lighten the load wherever I can.

If I'm honest, there are days when it's exhausting.

Like so many of the families we serve, I'm balancing work, family, responsibilities at home, and the people who depend on me. Some days I wonder how everything will get done.

And then I remember...

This isn't a burden.

It's a privilege.

I also think about my sister, mildly developmentally disabled, who lives with my husband and me. Although she faces her own challenges, she's one of the greatest helpers I know. She folds laundry, helps prepare meals, washes dishes, and every couple of weeks she spends time helping our parents, too.

Our family isn't perfect.

None of us can do everything.

But together, we take care of one another.

That simple truth has been on my heart lately.

Every day through Brighter Days Senior Companions, Audrey and I have the privilege of walking alongside families who are doing exactly the same things that we are. Some are caring for aging parents. Some live miles away and need someone they can trust to step in. Others simply need an extra set of hands or a caring heart to help make the day a little easier.

I've come to realize that caregiving doesn't always look extraordinary.

Sometimes it looks like making soup.

Driving to an appointment.

Picking up a prescription.

Sitting quietly through a difficult afternoon.

Or simply showing up because someone you love shouldn't have to face the day alone.

Those moments may never make the headlines.

But I believe they're some of the most meaningful moments we'll ever experience.

As I begin this journey alongside my dad, I'm reminded that love has a beautiful way of coming full circle.

The people who once held our hands may someday need us to hold theirs.

And while that season isn't always easy, it is one of life's greatest honors.

Thank you for allowing us to share these reflections with you. We hope they remind you that no act of kindness is ever too small and that caring for one another is one of the greatest gifts we can give.

With gratitude,

LaRita Armour & Audrey Orr
